Democracy in Action
I'm plenty busy this afternoon, but when I heard about this I had to blog about it ASAP. Tomorrow is Thursday (AKA our day off), and Melissa and I are planning on going into the City to see the palace and some of the major Buddhist temples. Afterwards, Melissa is supposed to meet up with the other women on the team to hangout in the downtown area. As of 12:30pm, these plans are facing a possible interruption...elephants. That's right, there is a possible elephant jam tomorrow that could potentially bring all traffic in Bangkok to a standstill.
The reason behind all this is because tomorrow the interim government will decide whether or not to dissolve the top two political parties in Thailand. Thai Rak Thai (the party of the ousted Prime minister) and the Democratic Party (the party of the current Governor of Bangkok) are both looking like they will be terminated tomorrow. In protest, supporters of Thai rak Thai have planned on leading 100 elephants into the heart of Bangkok. The traffic in Bangkok may already be the worst in the world. When we went downtown the first time, it took us an hour to go 12 miles to the skytrain stop. So, with a slight chance of elephants in the forecast, we are looking into new options for our day off.
